Best Hotels in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria: the Cliff Is the Real Address

Many of the hotels that show up first for Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, are not down in the resort's valley. They sit up on the cliffs between Puerto Rico's marina and Playa de Amadores, which is why they have the sea views, and why at least one runs a free bus down to the beach.

That geography is the decision. A cliff-top hotel buys the Atlantic from your balcony and costs you a climb or a bus ride; a hotel near Amadores or the marina buys the walk. On top of that sits the usual question of who else is at the pool, and the four hotels below answer it four different ways.

Servatur Puerto Azul

The all-rounder, and the one that suits families and couples in the same building. Servatur Puerto Azul is a fully renovated four-star on the cliff between the Amadores beaches, with Atlantic views and a lot of facilities for the space.

It has five swimming pools, a solarium, a wellness centre, a gym and a multi-sports court. Children get a splash area with slides, a mini-club and a playground; adults get an adults-only area with infinity views over the ocean, which is the detail that makes it work for a mixed group.

All-inclusive is available among its board options, with daytime activities and evening shows. Check current rates for Servatur Puerto Azul if you want both a kids' splash area and somewhere quiet to escape to.

Hotel Riu Vistamar

The all-inclusive family booking. Riu Vistamar, on Avenida de la Cornisa above the coast, runs a 24-hour all-inclusive with buffet and themed restaurants and bars looking out over the sea.

Its pools are laid out for families, with two outdoor pools and pools for babies and children, and children are looked after at the RiuLand kids' club.

The trade-off is the beach: Playa de Amadores is just under 2km away, and the hotel runs a free bus to it. Book it if everything included matters more than stepping onto the sand. Check current rates for Riu Vistamar.

Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa

The spa booking, and the closest of the four to the sand. Gloria Palace Royal sits about 200 metres from Playa de Amadores, built in natural stone, with an infinity pool with sea views and rooms with balconies facing the Atlantic.

The spa has an indoor pool, hot tub and gym. The hotel welcomes children, but spa access is for guests aged 15 and over, with set children's hours, and under-16s must be accompanied. A children's pool, playground and mini-club cover the rest of the day. All-inclusive is available, with premium brands and table service.

Puerto Rico's shops and restaurants are about a 15-minute walk away. Check current rates for Gloria Palace Royal if the spa is the reason for the trip. Do not confuse it with its sister, Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel, which is a separate property nearby.

Marina Bayview

The adults-only booking. Marina Bayview is a four-star, adults-only hotel built into the cliff side above Puerto Rico's marina, and the view over the harbour is what you are paying for.

It runs under the same Marina Gran Canaria group as Marina Suites, its sister aparthotel at the foot of the marina, and Bayview guests can also dine there. That pairing makes it easy to be child-free at the hotel without being cut off from the marina below.

Book it if you are two adults and want Puerto Rico without children at the pool. Check current rates for Marina Bayview, and confirm the listing says Adults Only, since Marina Suites is a separate listing with an adults' area rather than an adults-only policy.

Two more worth knowing about

Marina Suites Gran Canaria is Bayview's sister: an aparthotel beside Puerto Rico's marina with kitchens in the suites, an infinity pool over the Atlantic and an adults' area with two hot tubs. It is the self-catering choice for families who want the marina on the doorstep, about a 10-minute walk from Amadores.

Servatur JB is an adults-only hotel from the Servatur group in Puerto Rico, worth comparing with Marina Bayview if the first choice is full.

What the Puerto Rico premium actually buys

Compare these properly and the pattern is obvious: in Puerto Rico you pay for height. The cliff-top hotels have the views because they are above the town, and the price of the view is a bus or a climb whenever you want the beach.

The second pattern is that most of the good family stock mixes in adult space rather than splitting families and couples into separate hotels. Puerto Azul has an adults-only pool area, Gloria Palace Royal has an age-limited spa, and Marina Suites has an adults' area with hot tubs. Of the four in the grid, only Marina Bayview is a clean adults-only booking.

When to book

Puerto Rico is family-weighted, so its prices climb hardest in the northern European school holidays, with Christmas, February half-term and Easter the expensive weeks. Adults-only rooms such as Marina Bayview's are the smaller pool of stock, so book those earlier.
