Timanfaya National Park Tour: What a Tour Adds to the €30 Ticket

Every visitor sees Timanfaya's volcanic core from the park's own coach on the Route of the Volcanoes, and entry is sold by timed slot at €30 per adult. So a tour buys transport, a guide and no slot-hunting. The best value is the nine-hour day adding Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes at about €89, since its three entries alone cost €64. For Timanfaya only, a half-day tour costs about €59.

A nine-hour guided day from the resorts: the Route of the Volcanoes and the geothermal demonstrations in Timanfaya, a guided visit to Cueva de los Verdes and free time at Jameos del Agua.

  • Entry to all three sites included (€64 if bought separately)
  • Pickup from 59 points across the main resorts
  • Live guide in English, Spanish, German and French
  • Lunch extra, about €18, or bring your own

What does a Timanfaya tour add to the ticket?

Less than most people expect: the Montañas del Fuego ticket already includes the Route of the Volcanoes, a 14 km loop through the main eruption zone in a park coach with recorded commentary in Spanish, English and German.

The ticket is sold by CACT, which runs Lanzarote's tourist centres, at €30 per adult (October 2026). It covers parking on Islote de Hilario, the 35-minute coach route and the geothermal demonstrations, where water poured into the ground erupts as steam. Children aged 7 to 12 pay €15 and under-7s go free.

So the half-day tour at about €59 is roughly €30 of ticket plus €29 for transport, a guide and someone else handling the time slot. A couple with a hire car saves about €58 by going alone. Without a car, the tour is the simple answer.

Which Timanfaya tour should you book?

Book the full day with the caves if you have one day for sightseeing. Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes cost €17 each at the gate, so the three entries come to €64, and the tour above includes all three for about €89. That leaves about €25 for nine hours of transport and guiding. It rates 4★+ across thousands of reviews.

Book the half-day Timanfaya tour if Timanfaya is the one thing you want: about €59 with the entrance included, five hours, pickup in all four main resorts. It is the most-reviewed Timanfaya-only tour on GetYourGuide. Reviewers' most common complaint is the pace at Islote de Hilario, which gets crowded at peak times.

Heads up
The caves day is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users: Cueva de los Verdes is a lava tube with uneven underground terrain. The half-day tour is easier, though it also excludes non-folding and electric wheelchairs.

Book the volcano hike if you want to stand on the landscape rather than look at it through glass. The evening tour with a volcano dinner, at about €134, has far fewer reviews than the daytime tours, so treat it as a special-occasion extra.

Can you visit Timanfaya on your own?

Yes, and with a hire car it is the cheaper way for two or more. You drive to the entrance checkpoint at El Taro, on the road between Yaiza and Tinajo, and on to the car park on Islote de Hilario. You must stay in your car between the two: stopping or getting out inside the park is not permitted.

You cannot drive the Route of the Volcanoes yourself. The loop runs on a regulated road, and the park coach is the only way round it, for tour groups and independent visitors alike. El Diablo, the restaurant that grills over a five-metre geothermal well, sits on the same plateau and takes no reservations.

Do you need to book tickets in advance?

Plan on it. CACT sells entry for a specific date and time slot, subject to daily capacity, with slots from 09:00 to 15:45 every day of the year. You show a QR code on your phone, and tickets cannot be changed or refunded.

Arrive at the ticket office 15 minutes before your slot, because CACT does not guarantee entry once it has passed. In peak periods, book a few days ahead on the official CACT ticket page. Every coach tour above includes the entrance, and the operator holds the slot.

Can you hike in Timanfaya?

Not freely: walking on the lava inside the national park is not allowed. The guided hikes sold on GetYourGuide run in the Los Volcanes Natural Park next door.

The Geotrekking hike across Timanfaya's volcanic landscapes is the one with the volume: three hours, 9 km at an easy pace, about €44, snacks included and hotel transfer optional. It asks for moderate fitness and closed shoes, and it complements the coach route rather than replacing it.

For guided access inside the park, CACT runs its own Insólita Experience at €59.90: two hours in a small group at 08:45 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, with a climb of Montaña Rajada and a tasting of local produce and wine.

Starting from your resort

Both tours above collect from dozens of points in and around Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Arrecife, and the half-day runs four to six hours depending on where you board. Time at Timanfaya is the same for everyone; only the coach time changes.

Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen are the closest resorts to the park, which sits in the south-west between Yaiza and Tinajo. Costa Teguise, north of Arrecife, means the longest ride. Puerto del Carmen is also where most of the island's boat trips sail from, as our Lanzarote boat trip guide explains.

What to wear and bring

CACT advises comfortable clothes and shoes, a cap and sun protection from June to September, and a warm layer from October to April, because Islote de Hilario is exposed and windy. Tour operators recommend closed shoes for the uneven ground.

Pushchairs are awkward on site, so bring a baby carrier for small children. To drive a buggy through volcanic country outside the park, see our Lanzarote volcano buggy tour guide; for the rest of the island, our best Lanzarote excursions guide.
