Lanzarote's vines grow in pits dug through volcanic ash, and the best tastings happen at the bodegas themselves. The top-rated is El Grifo's two-hour Wine Lovers tour at ~€50: six wines, the museum in the 1775 winery and a guide, adults only, Monday to Friday. Like the cheaper vineyard tastings from ~€24, it has no hotel pickup, so settle who is driving before you book, or pick a tour that collects you.

Which Lanzarote wine tour should you book?
The biggest difference between Lanzarote's well-reviewed wine tours is not the wine but whether anyone drives you. Prices are per person on GetYourGuide in October 2026.
| Tour | Price | Length | Tasting | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Grifo Wine Lovers | ~€50 | 2 h | 6 wines, cheese | Own way |
| Vineyard tour, wine and chocolate | ~€24 | 1.5 h | 2 wines, chocolate | Own way |
| Sunset vineyard tour | ~€26 | 1.5 h | 2 wines, chocolate | Own way |
| La Geria vineyard hike | ~€47 | 4 h | Malvasía, cheese | Pickup option |
| Lanzarote by Night | ~€69 + dinner | 5.5 h | 2 wines, cava | Hotel pickup |
Book El Grifo if the wine is the point. It is the longest tasting, run by the winery, with the museum included. Get there by taxi, or with a driver who skips the glasses.
Book the vineyard tour at ~€24 for a short, cheap taste of the landscape and two organic wines. Book the La Geria hike if you would rather walk than sit and want transport: it is the best-rated wine tour with a pickup option.
What the El Grifo tasting includes
El Grifo dates from 1775: its founding stone turned up during restoration work in 1986, and the bodega counts itself among the ten oldest wineries in Spain. It sits on the LZ-30 in San Bartolomé.
The Wine Lovers tour lasts two hours, for up to 12 people. You walk among centuries-old vines planted in chabocos, holes cut into the solid lava, see the original wine press in the museum and the family library, then taste six wines with Canarian cheeses. El Grifo charges the same ~€50 direct; GetYourGuide adds free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
El Grifo sells two cheaper ways in, both booked direct: a self-guided audio visit with two wines at ~€15, free for under-18s, and a 35-minute tasting of five wines at ~€30 without the tour.
The ~€24 vineyard tours: wine and chocolate at Finca Testeina
Both cheap vineyard tours take place at Finca Testeina, an estate of Bodegas Vega de Yuco below the Testeina volcano, near Masdache. You meet at the house, which has free parking.
Each is a 50-minute guided walk through the vineyard, the 16th-century manor house and the old winery, then 40 minutes tasting two organic wines with chocolates from an island workshop. The guide explains Malvasía Volcánica and Listán Negro, Lanzarote's main white and red grapes.
The daytime vineyard tour with wine and chocolate at ~€24 is the most-reviewed winery visit in Lanzarote on GetYourGuide. The sunset version at ~€26 is listed for 18:30–20:00 in October 2026, and children's tickets come with juice and chocolate instead of wine.
Can you do a wine tour in Lanzarote without driving?
Yes, but only two of the five tours collect you, and the law is strict. Spain's drink-drive limit is 0.5 g of alcohol per litre of blood, or 0.25 mg/l on a breath test, and 0.3 g/l for drivers with under two years' experience. A cut to 0.2 g/l began its passage through parliament in September 2026.
The La Geria vineyard hike, with pickup
The La Geria vineyard hike at ~€47 covers 8.5 km past craters and walled vines in four hours, and ends with a dry Malvasía Volcánica and local cheese. It is sold as easy, though one reviewer found the climb and descent steep.
Pickup is optional and does not cover Playa Blanca or the villages near it; otherwise you meet at 09:30 at the Bodega Rubicón car park. The listing excludes children under 12.
An evening tour with dinner
Lanzarote by Night at ~€69 includes hotel pickup (the itinerary lists Playa Blanca, so check your resort is covered). It combines a bodega tasting, dinner at a village restaurant that you pay for on the night, and LagOmar after dark with a glass of cava, though the museum itself is closed in the evening. It is rated lower than the tours above and is for over-18s only.
Island tours through La Geria are sightseeing days, not wine tours: the Timanfaya National Park & La Geria Tour lists wine tasting as not included.
Visiting the bodegas by car
With a driver who is happy not to drink, the bodegas make an easy half-day. The LZ-30 crosses La Geria between Uga and Mozaga, and El Grifo and Bodega La Geria both sit on it. These details come from each bodega's own website in October 2026:
- El Grifo: LZ-30 km 11, San Bartolomé. Monday to Friday, last entry 17:15; visits from ~€15.
- Bodega La Geria: km 19 on the La Geria road, founded in 1896. Open 10:00–19:00, with 50-minute guided visits released online 12 days ahead.
- Stratvs: in the Barranco del Obispo beside Timanfaya. Daily guided visits of about an hour end with three wines and Finca de Uga cheese.
- Rubicón: traces its estate back to 1570, with a wine shop, visits, tastings and a restaurant.
- Los Bermejos: guided tours are suspended while the winery moves, but the terrace is open for tastings.
La Geria sits next to Timanfaya, so pair a tasting with the Fire Mountains: our Timanfaya National Park tour guide covers the timed tickets.
What makes Lanzarote wine different?
The eruptions of 1730–1736 buried farmland under volcanic ash, called picón or lapilli. Farmers dug pits about 3 m wide and 2–2.5 m deep down to the old soil, planted vines at the bottom and ringed each with a semicircular stone wall 60–70 cm high against the wind.
The ash does the watering. Lanzarote gets about 150 mm of rain a year, and the porous picón soaks up dew and stops the soil beneath drying out, says the DO Lanzarote regulatory council. Machines cannot work the pits, so it is all done by hand, for yields of just 1,000–1,500 kg per hectare.
Malvasía Volcánica is the grape to taste. It is Lanzarote's own variety and the most planted in the DO, made dry, semi-sweet and sweet, with a mineral flavour and relatively high acidity. Listán Negro is the main red. Phylloxera never reached the island, so the vines grow on their own roots.
Is La Geria worth visiting?
Yes, even without a tasting. Lanzarote has about 2,000 hectares of vines, and La Geria, between Yaiza and Tías, is where the pit system reaches its fullest form. It has been a protected landscape since 1994, and the on-road tour in our Lanzarote volcano buggy tour guide drives through it.
When is the best time for a Lanzarote wine tour?
The tours run all year, but the harvest comes early. The 2026 harvest started in the week of 9 July, brought forward by high temperatures. Malvasía Volcánica is picked first; Los Bermejos lists Listán Negro for late August and Diego and Moscatel for mid-September.
