Gran Canaria Volcano Sunset Tour: Roque Nublo and the Summit Without the Logistics

Gran Canaria's best-selling volcano day is a 10-hour small-group tour that covers the Bandama crater, lunch near Cruz de Tejeda, a 3.5km hike to Roque Nublo and sunset from Pico de las Nieves, the island's highest point. It runs from ~€113 per person on GetYourGuide, with free pickup from the southern resorts and Las Palmas. The one part to take seriously is the hike: short, but steep and rocky.

What does the volcano sunset tour cover?

The tour is run by Climbo, a Gran Canaria activity company, which sells it on its own site as The Volcano Heart Tour. GetYourGuide has listed the same day as "The Volcano's Heart Tour" and now as the Volcano Sunset Tour and Local Food Tasting. The stops, in order, as the listing gives them:

• Caldera de Bandama (about 1 hour): a guided look at the crater and the island's volcanic origins
• Cruz de Tejeda (about 100 minutes): the mountain pass and its market stalls, with lunch at Tajinaste restaurant
• Roque Nublo (about 3 hours): the guided hike to the rock and back
• Pico de las Nieves (about 1 hour): sunset from the summit, with a shot of honey rum

The van rides either side add roughly an hour each way. Climbo puts the full day at 9 to 11.5 hours, including 6.5 hours of actual touring and 2.5 to 5 hours of transport, depending on where you are picked up. It calls the day a tour of three volcanic calderas, Bandama, Tejeda and Tirajana, the last of them seen from the Pico de las Nieves viewpoint.

How hard is the Roque Nublo hike on this tour?

Harder than the distance suggests. The trail is about 3.5km return with around 200m of climbing, an average gradient of 16% and a maximum of 60%, on rocky, uneven ground. Climbo describes it as short but intense, and says it requires good physical condition.

The group moves at a pace set by sunset, so the guide cannot slow everyone down for one walker. If you cannot keep up, you wait at the start of the trail while the others go on. There are no toilets on the hike.

GetYourGuide's listing marks the tour as unsuitable for children under 5, adults over 80, pregnant women, people with heart problems and people with mobility impairments. Climbo also caps children at four places per tour, so families should book early.

What is included, and what is the food like?

The meal is at Tajinaste restaurant, which Climbo describes as local Canarian ingredients with fusion cooking, and the stop at Cruz de Tejeda is a chance to try Canarian products, with local wine, cheese and honey rum mentioned in the operator's FAQ. Soft drinks are available for anyone skipping the wine.

Recent reviews are warm about the guides and the views. The recurring note is that clearer expectations about the lunch and tasting portions would help, so treat it as a tasting rather than a big sit-down lunch, and pack the snacks.

Where does the tour pick up, and when do you get back?

Pickup is free from Puerto de Mogán, Taurito, Playa del Cura, Amadores, Puerto Rico, Patalavaca, Arguineguín, Maspalomas and the Faro, Playa del Inglés, San Agustín, Playa del Águila, Bahía Feliz and Las Palmas. The van starts in Mogán and works its way east along the coast, with Las Palmas the last stop before the first crater.

Start times follow the sunset, so they move with the seasons. Climbo's approximate windows:

• Winter (late October to late March): southern pickups between about 09:45 and 11:30, Las Palmas between 10:45 and 11:45
• Summer (late March to late October): southern pickups between about 11:45 and 13:30, Las Palmas between 12:45 and 13:45

The exact time is confirmed the afternoon before. Expect to be back at your hotel about one and a half to two hours after sunset, which is often after hotel dinner service ends, so check your restaurant hours or plan to eat late.

This tour does not work for cruise passengers. Climbo says outright that the schedule cannot fit a ship's return time.

Is it worth the price, or is there a cheaper way to see the summits?

It depends on how much of the day you want done for you. As of September 2026, the tour costs from ~€113 per person on GetYourGuide, while Climbo's own website lists €125. You will also find the same tour on Viator, Musement and TripAdvisor; Climbo confirms these are all its own tour, not copies.

The Las Palmas tour is the cheaper way to reach Roque Nublo, but it picks up only in the capital, and it finishes in Teror in daylight rather than at a summit sunset. From the southern resorts, the volcano sunset tour is the one that collects you.

The other two interior tours with tastings on GetYourGuide cost about the same. Neither lists Roque Nublo or the summit sunset in its title, so read the itinerary if either of those is what you are after.

Should you book it?

Book it if you are staying in the south without a car and want Roque Nublo, the summit and a sunset above the clouds in one day, with the driving, the mountain roads and the trailhead handled for you. Book it too if you are a confident walker who wants a guide to explain what you are looking at.

Skip it if steep, rocky ground is a real problem, since the hike is the centre of the day and waiting at the trailhead is the only alternative. Skip it too if you already have a hire car and are happy to plan the reservation and the shuttle yourself.
