You don't need a licence to ride a jet ski in Lanzarote, as long as you follow a guide or stay inside a marked circuit. Prices are per jet ski: about €70 for up to two on the guided tour from Puerto del Carmen or a circuit hire, and about €130 for one on a 40-minute safari from Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca. Drivers must be 18, or 16 with signed parental consent.

H2O Sports' guided rides from Puerto del Carmen harbour along the volcanic coast to Playa Quemada, with a longer route to the Papagayo beaches.

  • Price per jet ski, for one or two riders
  • Guide, life jacket, wetsuit and locker included
  • Routes from 40 minutes to two hours
  • Hotel pickup costs €5 extra per person

Do you need a licence to ride a jet ski in Lanzarote?

Not for the rides holidaymakers book. Spain's jet ski rules, Royal Decree 259/2002, last amended by Royal Decree 1188/2025 with effect from 31 December 2025, allow two kinds of hourly hire without a licence:

  • Circuit hire: you ride inside the hire company's marked circuit, and no further, unless you hold a licence.
  • Guided excursion: you ride in a group behind a monitor. Since the 2025 change, one monitor can supervise at most four jet skis, with no more than two people on each.

Hiring a jet ski by the day, or riding one privately, needs a licence: a Spanish navigation licence or a boating title. Every rider, not just the person who booked, gets a briefing on handling and basic rules before setting off.

How old do you have to be to drive a jet ski?

Eighteen, under article 4 of the same decree. Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds may drive with their parents' or guardians' consent in a signed document, together with a photocopy of that parent's ID card or passport, which the teenager must be able to show at any time.

Passengers can be younger, and the operators set their own limits. H2O Sports and the Marina Rubicón safari take passengers from age 8, and Paracraft's circuit hire takes 8-year-olds with an adult if they are at least 130 cm tall. Weight limits apply too: 150 kg per person with H2O Sports, 100 kg at Paracraft.

Guided tour or circuit hire: which should you book?

These are the options on GetYourGuide in October 2026, with prices per jet ski.

Book the guided tour if you want to go somewhere. It follows the coast, and two of you share the jet ski and the €70. Book the circuit hire if you want speed and turns in a short, cheap session. In Playa Blanca, the Marina Rubicón safari is the only one of these that starts there.

The H2O Sports tour from Puerto del Carmen

You meet at the entrance to Puerto del Carmen's harbour, opposite the petrol station, and get a wetsuit, life jacket and safety briefing before following the guide out. The listing offers three routes:

  • Playa Quemada (40 minutes): past the Barranco del Quíquere and Puerto Calero to Playa Quemada and back.
  • One-hour route: sold as the Papagayo route, but the route it describes turns at Playa Quemada.
  • South route (2 hours): past Punta Gorda to Punta Papagayo and Papagayo beach, the one that actually reaches Papagayo.

The guide, jet ski, life jacket, wetsuit and a locker are included. Hotel pickup is not, despite the "hotel pickup" in the web address: it costs €5 extra per person, and food, towels and tips are excluded too. Bring a passport or ID card. Reviewers enjoy swapping drivers, and their main complaint is the paid photo package, which they want explained upfront.

Jet ski hire in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca

Paracraft's circuit hire in Puerto del Carmen at ~€70 gives you 20 or 40 minutes on a single or double jet ski around a course of four buoys, as many laps as you like. A T-shirt is compulsory, under-18 drivers need parental authorisation, and there is no pickup. Some reviewers say the booking should state the number of jet skis and the time on the water more clearly.

The 40-minute jet ski safari from Marina Rubicón at ~€130 for one rider runs in groups of one to four jet skis, behind an instructor, along the coast from the Pechiguera lighthouse to the Papagayo beaches. The operator says flying fish, turtles and even dolphins can be seen on the way.

The buggy and jet ski combination

Paracraft's Duo Pack at about €200 for up to two combines a 2.5-hour buggy tour with a 20-minute double jet ski ride at Playa Chica. Buggy drivers must be 21 or over and bring their driving licence. For the buggy routes on their own, see our Lanzarote volcano buggy tour guide.

For calmer time on the water, the Lanzarote boat trip guide covers the Papagayo catamarans, and our best Lanzarote excursions guide ranks every option.
