Quad Biking in Tenerife: You Need a Driving Licence, and Most Guides Forget to Say So

Book a quad tour in Tenerife and the thing most likely to stop you riding is not weather or availability. It is your wallet. Driving a quad here requires a full category B driving licence and a driver aged 18 or over, and the licence has to be with you on the day.

That single rule is why quad tours suit a different group from every other activity on this coast. A three to four hour Teide route from Santiago del Teide costs €60 per person as checked on 19 August 2026, with a daytime or a sunset departure, and passengers can come along from around 7 years old without any paperwork of their own.

The licence rule, and what counts

Take this seriously, because operators check at the base and there is no way around it on the day.

• Driver: minimum 18 years old, holding a full category B (car) licence
• Accepted documents: EU licences and valid international driving permits
• Provisional or learner licences: generally not accepted
• Passenger: from around 7 years old, often with a 1.20m height minimum, and no licence needed
• Requirements vary by operator, so confirm yours rather than assuming

The height rule for passengers is the one that surprises families. A child can be old enough and still be turned away for being too short to sit safely with their feet on the rests.

Why this is the opposite of the jet ski rules

It is worth putting the two side by side, because groups often assume the land activity is the more accessible one and it is not.

What the Teide route is like

The tour starts in Santiago del Teide, a mountain town in the west rather than a beach resort, and climbs towards the national park through pine forest and volcanic terrain. The three to four hour window includes briefing, stops and photographs rather than being continuous riding.

The sunset departure is the one worth thinking about. The light on the volcanic ground late in the day is the reason to pick it, and the trade-off is that it gets genuinely cold as you gain height once the sun drops.

Santiago del Teide is next to Masca, but do not plan both

The start point sits close to Masca, and the geography tempts people into stacking the two into one day. It does not work.

What to wear and expect

Closed shoes, long trousers and a layer you can add. The route gains height, and the temperature at the top of it bears no relation to the temperature at a southern hotel, which is the single most common complaint from people who dressed for the beach.

Expect dust. Sunglasses are practical equipment rather than a fashion choice, and anything white will not stay that way. Helmets are provided.
