Things to Do in Puerto de Mogán: Pick Friday, Then Go Under the Harbour

Puerto de Mogán gets described as "Little Venice" in most guides, and that is the least useful thing to know about it. The useful thing is the calendar. The village market runs every Friday from 09:00 to 14:00, spreading from the marina towards the beach, and it changes the day completely: busier, livelier, and harder to see the village itself.

The other thing that sets it apart is below the waterline. The Golden Shark, a 44-passenger yellow submarine run by Atlántida Submarine, which has operated in Puerto de Mogán since 1996, dives to about 25 metres into an artificial reef park for a trip of around 40 minutes. Pick the day for the market, or avoid it, and book the submarine either way.

Should you go on market day?

That depends on what you came for. The Friday market is held every week of the year, from 09:00 to 14:00, with stalls running from the marina through the village towards the beach: Canarian crafts, leather goods, linens, clothes, jewellery, plants, fruit and vegetables. Haggling is normal.

Go on a Friday if the market is the day out. Arrive before 10:00 for the best of the stalls and before the heat builds.

Go on any other day if you want the village rather than the stalls. The canals, the harbour walk and the beach are the same on a Tuesday, with far fewer people.

What does the submarine actually show you?

The Golden Shark departs from Puerto de Mogán and dives into the Underwater Park La Atlántida, which the operator describes as the first artificial reef park in the Canary Islands, created to protect and regenerate the seabed in the area. The park has a maximum depth of 25 metres and was scaled to the submarine's size.

Gran Canaria's tourism board describes the park as around 350 submerged structures across 3,000 square metres, themed as the ruins of a lost civilisation: temple columns, collapsed palaces, shipwreck replicas and whale skeletons, now colonised by the local marine life.

The submarine itself is Finnish-built, 18 metres long, electric-powered and fitted with 22 portholes, 11 on each side. It is rated for 75 metres, but the park limits every trip to around 25. The cabin stays at surface pressure, and the tourism board describes the trip as suitable for everyone, including pregnant women and people with heart or hearing conditions.

Two practical rules from the listing: exchange your voucher at the Submarine Adventure boarding area on the south dock at least 20 minutes before departure, and note that boarding closes 10 minutes before the trip starts.

The harbour, the flowers and the 257 steps

The village is small enough to walk end to end in minutes. Cross the little bridges over the canals through lanes of white houses under bougainvillea, then follow the marina out past the moored yachts. A walk out to the small lighthouse takes about 20 to 25 minutes.

For the view, climb to the Mirador Juan Hernández Moreno above the marina. It is exactly 257 steps, not suitable for pushchairs or anyone with reduced mobility, and faces the wrong way for sunset because of the mountain behind it. Go early in the morning, or late in the day once the heat drops.

The beach, and snorkelling from it

Playa de Mogán is about 200 metres of sheltered beach with calm water, showers, footbaths, sunbed and umbrella hire, a children's area and access for people with reduced mobility. It is the easy half of a Mogán day.

Seeing the island from Mogán

How do you get to Puerto de Mogán?

By bus from the southern resorts, Mogán's tourist office lists Global lines 32, 33 and 39 from Playa del Inglés along the coast, and lines 1 and 91 from Las Palmas, with line 91 also serving the airport. Journey times vary widely by line and stop pattern, so check the Global app rather than trusting a single figure.
